According to this article in the Economist, electric car maker Tesla Motors has posted a profit, a first in the industry. This comes after ten years of bleeding money. The reason: higher than expected sales of the Model S and a streamlined manufacturing process.
Is this a turning point for the electric car industry or just another false dawn? I think eventually electric vehicles will become universal, though I think the shift in propulsion technology will do litte to improve transportation. The bigger problem with automobiles is not pollution but the enormous amount of resources and infrastructure we have devoted to them. Batteries will do nothing to change that.
